Graylyn Pool Lifeguard Manager: Carstyn Klosterman

This month’s employee spotlight is our Graylyn Pool and Tennis Club Lifeguard Manager, Carstyn Klosterman. She previously served as the Assistant Manager at the Graylyn Pool and we were thrilled to have her return as this year’s Manager. Carstyn has played an integral part in ensuring our members and their families enjoyed their summer at the pool.

To celebrate all of Carstyn’s achievements, we asked her a few questions about her time at the Graylyn Pool.

Tell us more about your role and background.

As Lifeguard Manager I help introduce new Lifeguards, manage the shift schedule (with the help of my assistant managers), and update the members on any events or recent changes that have been made at the pool. I also watch the pool and give swim lessons to some of our kids!

I have been a lifeguard for Graylyn since 2019. I was unable to work in 2020 because of COVID, but was very eager to come back as Assistant Manager along with Ben Lefevre in 2021. In 2022 I accepted the Lifeguard Manager position and have thoroughly enjoyed my time!

What made you apply for the Graylyn Pool Lifeguard Manager position?

I was recommended by Kimberly who was the former Lifeguard Manager. I loved my time at Graylyn the past 2 years as a lifeguard and assistant manager and was ready to take on the challenge!

What’s a highlight from opening day?

I loved being there to see everyone walk into the gate. I get to know the members and their kids fairly well and love catching up with them about what has happened in the past 9 months.

What do you like most about working at the Graylyn Pool?

I love the family atmosphere we have created at Graylyn. I used to come to the pool as a little kid so I have played with the same children I know keep safe. I am so grateful for my lifeguard team and their ability to step up when asked to. Eden Gfeller (Assistant Manager) and Roy Greco (Lifeguard) have been especially helpful in the past couple weeks when we were a little short staffed. They put everything aside to make sure our members had a safe and fun time at the pool.

What is the favorite part about your job? What excites you most?

My favorite part of the job is getting to talk to all of the members each time I sit at the desk. I love talking about the latest book they have read or a recent movie they’ve watched. What excites most is adapting to different challenges that the pool throws at me and my team. Every day is different at Graylyn. It definitely keeps me on my toes and forces us to think creatively about different solutions.

What do you see as the biggest accomplishment this season?

I think the 4th of July was our biggest accomplishment of the season. We had a ton of different games such as a scavenger hunt, greasy watermelon, soda toss, and biggest splash competitions! Some members volunteered to bring food and drinks and we had a little potluck going on throughout the day. It was a whirlwind but so much fun!

What is your favorite hobby or activity to do outside of work?

I love to read, watch old movies, rock climb, hike, swim, and spend time with my family (usually doing and escape room).

Thank you Carstyn for all your hard work and support.

Cheers to a very successful summer!
