University Stores Employee: James Hamilton

Photo of Deacon Shop Manager, James Hamilton, standing in front of the hat display in the Deacon Shop on campus.

Jim goes above and beyond in his Department Manager General Merchandise role in the Deacon Shop. He works tirelessly in making sure our point-of-sale systems are working properly in-store as well as offsite during game day and special events. In the absence of a store manager at the Deacon Shop, Jim has stepped in to assume other
responsibilities to ensure store success this past year.

“Thank you James Hamilton for ensuring store success at the Deacon Shop”.

Willie Williams, General Manager of Stores, Wake Forest University.

To celebrate all of Jim’s achievements, we asked him a few questions about his time here at WFU.

Tell us more about your role and background.

My main focus is taking care of the daily activities at the Deacon Shop inside Kitchin Hall. You’ll also find me managing and assisting all the Deacon Shop locations at different athletic events.

My background consists of attending another ACC school (Georgia Tech) and spending years working at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and The Container Store. Both businesses offer programs focused on college students, so it is a relatively easy transition from working there to working at Wake Forest University.

What made you apply for your first job at Wake?

Wake Forest has a great and unique environment, and it truly feels like a destination university. I kept an eye on possible openings for a few years prior to starting here. I was very patient. Once I found the opportunity to apply for a role with my qualifications, I immediately applied and I was hired.

Do you remember your first day?

I remember it was shortly before the residence halls opened for incoming freshmen. It was very busy in the stores as we prepared for their arrival. We were filling the stores and pulling together many textbook orders.

What do you like most about working at WFU?

The people. I love working with and interacting with all the great people.

What is the favorite part about your job? What excites you most?

My favorite part is experiencing all the success stories. From when a prospective student realizes they want to attend Wake to their graduation day, from experiencing the successes of our Athletic teams to witnessing the rolling of the Quad, and from celebrating employee milestones to alumni returning back to campus, it is wonderful to experience the joy, excitement, and pride surrounding all these events.

I have even witnessed a marriage proposal in front of thousands at the Joel and witnessed another marriage proposal in front of Wait Chapel. It brings much happiness to see something like that.

What do you see as the biggest accomplishment since your start at Wake?

My biggest accomplishments have been hearing from alumni, who worked with me while they were attending Wake, and receiving thanks for the guidance and impact I made on them.

What is your favorite hobby or activity to do outside of work?

I love spending time with my dog and making day trips to explore different parts of the state.
